My Dog Remembers Who Buys the Kibble. Why Doesn’t My Congressman?
SATIRE

It is one of the absolute, unbroken rules of the universe: if you pay for something, you own it.
If you buy a coffee, you get to drink it. If you rent an apartment, you get to live in it. And if you bring a four-legged creature into your home, buy its food, pay its medical bills, and scoop its waste out of the grass on a freezing Tuesday morning, you are universally acknowledged as The Boss.
The deal is crystal clear. You provide the room, board, and squeaky toys; the dog provides loyalty, affection, and at least a vague attempt at listening when you tell it to stop barking at the mail carrier.
So why on earth does this basic economic rule completely collapse the second the creature in question wears a tailored suit and runs for public office?
Think about it. An elected official is, for all practical purposes, the most expensive house pet you will ever adopt. You buy their clothes. You pay for their housing allowances. You fund their travel, their healthcare, their pension, their security detail, and their catered lunches. Through the polite form of protection money known as taxation, you are entirely responsible for keeping them alive, fed, and impeccably groomed.
Yet somehow, the very second the election results are certified, the entire power dynamic flips on its head.
If your golden retriever suddenly put on a top hat, declared himself the supreme ruler of the living room, passed a household ordinance banning you from entering your own kitchen after 8:00 PM, and demanded 30% of your dinner as a "sanitation surcharge," you wouldn't comply. You would take him straight to the vet to check for neurological damage.
When a politician does it, we call it public service.
The Lifestyle Disparity
Consider the sheer absurdity of the living conditions.
In a standard domestic pet relationship, the owner maintains the higher standard of living. Your dog eats out of a metal bowl on the floor while you eat at the table. It sleeps on a cushion while you sleep on a mattress. It wears a ten-dollar nylon collar while you wear actual clothes.
Now look at your public servants.
You are paying for their entire existence out of your paycheck, yet they are the ones flying in private jets, staying at five-star resorts for "fact-finding conferences," and dining on fine dining menus at galas you couldn't get into with a battering ram. You are working fifty hours a week to afford a ten-year-old sedan that makes a funny noise when you turn left, while the person living off your hard-earned tax dollars is being chauffeured through town in a blacked-out SUV with police escorts clearing the traffic for them.
You are literally paying out of your own pocket to be shoved onto the shoulder of the highway so they aren't late for dinner.
Post-Election Amnesia Syndrome
Then there is the small matter of basic loyalty and memory retention.
A rescue dog takes about forty-eight hours to figure out who opens the food cans. Once it knows, that bond is sealed for life. It will remember your face, your voice, and the exact sound of your car turning into the driveway until its final breath.
A politician, on the other hand, suffers from a rare, medically fascinating condition known as Post-Election Sudden Amnesia.
During campaign season, they will look you dead in the eye, squeeze your hand with both of theirs, kiss your crying toddler, and swear on everything holy that they live only to serve you. They know your neighborhood, your job, and your exact personal struggles.
But the second they cross the threshold of the capital building, their brain completely wipes its hard drive.
If you try to approach them on the street three weeks after the election to ask about that pothole they promised to fix, their security detail will treat you like an unmapped biohazard and shove you into a hedge. They don't know you. They’ve never seen you. The only thing their brain is capable of recalling is the phone number of their highest-paying donor.
Who Protects Whom?
Even in a crisis, the comparison becomes embarrassing.
If a strange noise wakes you up in the middle of the night, a loyal guard dog will immediately put itself between you and the front door. It will bark, stand its ground, and fight to protect the person who feeds it.
If an economic storm hits, your politician will instantly use you as a human shield. They will hide behind three layers of press secretaries, blame the crisis on your spending habits, and pass an emergency bill explaining why you need to tighten your belt while they approve a quiet raise for their own committee.
The Ultimate Inversion
We have managed to invent the only domestic arrangement on earth where the benefactor gets put on a leash by the dependent. We hand over our hard-earned cash, fund a lavish lifestyle for people who wouldn't recognize us in a grocery store, and then line up every few years to vote on which new master gets to boss us around next.
So the next time you look at your dog resting its head on your knee, take a moment to appreciate the sheer honesty of the relationship. It knows who buys the kibble. It respects the hand that feeds it.
And if you ever find yourself listening to an elected official demanding more of your paycheck while lecturing you on how to run your life, just remember the golden rule of domestic stewardship: never let the creature you feed put you in a crate.
